This manual is designed to be the practical instruction for the learning strategies, tactics and techniques of self-defense against unarmed and armed opponents. The program is oriented to people with average fitness levels. These are the best technical elements, from different types of Martial Arts, in original and adapted forms that have been included in this system.
There are different parts of the body, which can be used as instruments in defense techniques. Your forehead, back of your head, finger formed in a certain position, the edge of your palm, a fist, an elbow, a knee, your feet, toes and heels can be effectively used in critical situations. You also can use successful passive defenses such as blocks, moves and stances, which can allow you to develop an effective defense.
There are over 50 vital points on a human body (sensitive skeletal points, or painful points on organs and nerve centers). While supporting your defense with this knowledge you can better protect yourself, family and friends in extreme situations.
For the active defense you should know these points on your body to be able to protect them as well as successfully use this knowledge against your enemy.
There are more than 10,000 different types of defense techniques. It is not practical or necessary to learn all of them due to the time and effort involved in the process. Even experts usually only know about 150-200 basic applications. They are trained to perform these techniques automatically.
My course is intended to be mastered in 130 hours of regular training (1 hour three times per week during a 10 month period). The system is based on three basic principles:
1. Effectivness:
There are many techniques, which are of value in each situation. I have chosen the one, which I think, will allow you to defeat an enemy in the shortest time.
2. Simplicity:
From the various techniques for any particular situation, the one, which was chosen, is the simplest (for a technical performance), because in real conditions even high skill techniques can be significantly affected by stress and threats to your life. At the same time when you have limited time for training, the simpler technique is the better, because you can "digest" it more easily. Special attention was paid to matching the principle of "simplicity" with the principle of "unification".
3. Unification:
It is known that every complex technique can be broken down into simple individual components like "blocks". Techniques with more common "blocks" were chosen because you can learn to do them automatically (as a reflex, without thinking).
This manual was designed as a self-learning system. This means that most of the techniques can be mastered in any environment. You need only one partner, but often you can practice even without a partner, using:
- Shadow training.
- Different objects for practicing punches, kicks etc.
For the convenience of learning the material, every lesson has a typical plan:
-*The opponent's position;
-*The technique;
-*The preparation for the technique;
-*Instructions;
-*Possible variants;
-*Possible counter by the opponent.

His book should be of interest to the beginner as well as the expert, as it has techniques, which will appeal to both. This book will appeal to the beginner because it zeros in on a few techniques, which can be mastered for each situation, instead of having an encyclopedia of techniques, which tend to confuse the beginner. Also, it is of merit because it explains and builds the techniques step by step, so that it is not complicated for beginners.
This book will appeal to the advanced student because on the one hand, it reminds us of the basic faints and distractions, which we were taught, back in the 60's, but haven't thought of or used since. On the other hand, it has some unusual techniques, such as self-defense using a belt, and multiple attacker responses. This is a needed addition, because too much of our modern martial arts deal with sparring with one person and with preparation for tournament.
In short, every one who has the rudiments of punching and kicking has something to learn from this book, and I recommend it to you heartily.
Sincerely,
William C. Phillips, President of Patience T'ai Chi Association
WHAT IS TERRORISM?
According to The National Security Institute (NSI), "terrorism" is the use of FORCE or VIOLENCE against persons or property in violation of the criminal laws of the United States for purposes of intimidation, coercion or ransom. Terrorists often use THREATS to create FEAR among the public, to try to convince citizens that their government is powerless to prevent terrorism, and to get immediate publicity for their causes. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) categorizes terrorism in the United States as one of two types--domestic terrorism and international terrorism. Domestic terrorism involves groups or individuals whose terrorist activities are directed at elements of our government or population without foreign direction. International terrorism involves groups or individuals whose terrorist activities are foreign-based and/or directed by countries or groups outside the United States or whose activities transcend national boundaries. In any case a victim is often left with almost no hope of outside help and can rely only on his* own ability to survive in an extreme situation. The price the victim pays for the inability to skillfully defend himself is his death and the death of many innocent people. Another example of violence, according to the F.B.I. Crime Index, is simple assault, which increased in US at a rate of 17% from 1997 to 1998, while forced sex offenses rose 450%.
According to the National Victim Center in the United States 1.3 women are raped every minute for a total of 638,280 rapes committed each year. One out of every three American women will be sexually assaulted in her lifetime. The U.S. has the world's highest rape rate of all the countries that publish sexual assault statistics.
A victim very often cannot call for help when there is a threat to her* life or simply doesn't have help when she* needs it. The price the victim pays for the inability to skillfully defend herself can be her death or at the least, an emotional trauma which she caries throughout her entire life.
The above-mentioned examples show that there is a need for a simple and effective course of self-defense for people with no special skills in defense techniques and with an average fitness level.
This book will provide a valuable tool in extremely dangerous and volatile life threatening situations. A continuing dedication to theories and techniques outlined in the book will ensure a maximum opportunity for one to respond accurately and decisively in a dangerous environment
It is with deepest sympathy that I devote my book to all crime victims.
